Transmission pan gasket question

Would it be ok or not ok to use a little rtv high temp gasket maker along with the rubber gasket when reinstalling the transmission pan? Just thin film to hold it in place and as added protection? Wasn't sure sense its a rubber gasket going on.

Thanks.

I dont think it will hurt just dont get it inside the pan. Be sure you torque the pan to spec.

Probably going to get a lot of opinions on this. I personally am not a big fan of RTV. In most cases it just acts like a lubricant and allows the gasket to squeeze out. If you need to secure the gasket use some spray adhesive. I have had the best luck, fewest leaks, by keeping the mating surfaces bone dry.
Also remember that "regular" RTV is corrosive and can damage aluminum. Use the, usually gray, non-corrosive type.
A good place to use RTV is where two or more gaskets meet. Intake manifold gaskets comes to mind.

Your NOT suppose to use gasket making material.... Could ruin the transmission if it get into the fluid....

I agree your not suppose to use it but had developed a strong leak in front of the pan. Tried torq'ing the bolts and still leaked. The gasket appearred in good shape when i removed it but I am positive that is were the leak was coming from. Just started this past weekend. The gaskets is probably roughly 3 years old. Wasn't sure if that was normal wear and tear on one and it had become worn as well as compressed allowing fluid to push out. So thought maybe some rtv would extend its life.

Well I decide to go without. I read the gasket manufacturers instructions and it stated not use anhy kind gasket maker or sealant with gasket. So oh well if it lasts three years again thats not that bad. It was time to change tranny fluid any how. Thanks all for the replys.

Over-tightening of the bolts is common, too. If the captive washers are no longer domed-but inverted, then they need to be replaced.
