Transmission fluid

I have a 94 TA and have not changed the transmission fluid in ~ 60-70K miles. I have heard rumors that you can do more harm than good if you change the transmission fluid with such high mileage. Is there any truth to the rumors?

Re: Transmission fluid

you shouldn't hurt it unless it is hurting alrdy and the fluid change can throw it over the edge. it should be ok atleast at that mileage

Re: Transmission fluid

I hope you havent changed it yet...

I Did change mine for the first time at over 128k miles on it... it was long overdue...BUT and this is a big BUT...

I first dropped the pan... cleaned it... replaced the filter and only then I took it to a shop to have the whole fluid flushed out with that machine.

Why all the trouble? Because I was told by a mechanic friend of mine that this machine has the tendency to stirr up all the dust acumulated in the Pan and then the filter gets clogged and you kiss the Tranny Goodbye.

Now I know there will people here who will disagree... BUT ... Mine still has the original transmission... and I have over 150k miles on it already without any glitches or problems. I think its the act of replacing the filter and cleaning the pan that has something to do with it.

So Dont forget... Filter and Pan..

Re: Transmission fluid

A tranny flush machine does not "stir" anything up, it hooks up before the cooler and is pressurized by the tranny's own pump.

Re: Transmission fluid

I was planning on dropping the pan and filter first, then maybe replace it with a deeper pan. I was then going to do a homemade flush of the transmission by removing the trans lines from the radiator and have the discharge end in an empty container and the suction end in a full container of trans fluid. If I start the car up the trans pump should discharge fluid and suck up new fluid. Of course this could turn into a royal mess.

Does anyone know which line connected to the radiator is the discharge? I was thinking about putting an external transmission filter on as well. Is this a good idea?
