Trans problem not sure what it is
I just bought a 94 z28 from a guy he said it would not go into gear. I went over there to see it he got it started and it sounded great. Few days later i got it towed. It goes into neutral but thats it, it just wont get anywhere else. Im a little mechanically inclined and know a lot of basics and a decent amount of in depth stuff. Ive had some friends say just rebuild/replace it. Before i do that does anyone got any suggestions about what to check or what it could be

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
Let's move this to the "Drivetrain" forum. We have a reliable trans builder who stops in once a week or so, and offers advice.
If you can, have the PCM scanned. The 4L60E trans is controlled by the PCM, and there are trouble codes for various problems. These codes do NOT turn on the SES light, so you won't know if you have them until you scan the PCM for codes. That requires an OBD-1 scanner, or scanning software.

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
I dont know anyone that has one and i cant seem to find one. Its really inconvenient for me to pay $200-300 for one and it may not solve my problem

It's "inconvenent"? Wow.
No need to spend $200-300.
There is a free download of 94/95 OBD-1 scanning software, written specifically for the LT1. The only cost would be a cable, which can be had for as little as $20.

There is also TTS DataMaster, which you can download for free, and use 20 times before it asks for a licensing fee. Again, just need a cable. Try a "search".

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
Currently im not in a spot to get a cable, no auto parts stores carry any and im trying get as much info as i can quickly. All i know is this car starts and runs, but moving the gear selector doesnt change a thing. You can put the lever in any gear it just acts as its in neutral the whole time

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
There's nothing electronic that will cause a "no move" condition. Your options are; torque converter, transmission pump, transmission input shaft, driveshaft, or rear differential. If it's the driveshaft or the differential, the speedometer will move with the car in gear, eventhough the car isn't.
This is most likely a transmission front pump issue. The best way to check this is to check to see if you have flow. This can be accomplished by disconnecting one of your cooler lines, running it into a suitable catch container, and starting the engine. You should pump 1 quart in 20 seconds. The best place to disconnect is where the bottom line connects to the radiator. This is your cooler feed line. Put a short piece of hose on the end of the line and run it into a bucket or jug.
If you have cooler flow, you either have a bad converter or broken input shaft/drum.
The only other possibiloity is if all the converter to flexplate bolts have fell out. Don't laugh!...I've seen it happen...LOL

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
Thanks for the help ill look into that. Also, i have a guy that told me he has a 4l60e from a 350 vortec in a 2000 truck. Will this bolt up to my lt1 and work or is it different since it is newer. I know it most likely has a different stall since its from a truck. And will a bad front pump cause me to completely rebuild this trans?

The 2000 4L60E has a different case and electronics. No, it won't work in your '94. While it is technically possible to just replace a pump, keep in mind that the 4L60E had other weak areas that should be addressed whenever a trans is out.

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
So my best bet is to try and replace/rebuild my transmission? I would rather try and look at it with more detail and hope its something simple because everything underneath looks ok without closer inspection. It doesn't make any odd noises or movements. Its really got me caught up, i've never known much about transmissions, but i have known enough to pick out odd problems here and there. This has me completely stuck..

Re: Trans problem not sure what it is
This gives me some hope, because when i firsted looked at the car this is what a friend mentioned. He also said you might not be able to just replace the pump because it could've caused some internals, such as seals, to go bad. Could you point me in the direction of a good replacement pump i could use? If i cant do that, this is the only thing i can find in my area that will work http://www.ebay.com/itm/94-Camaro-Firebird-Z28-Trans-Am-LT1-V8-4L60E-Automatic-Auto-Transmission-/161097098223?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item258222a3ef&vxp=mtr#shpCntId
