Trans go shift kit question
Trans go shift kit question
I am a pretty capable at home mechanic and i can do pretty much anything i need or want to do to my car at the house, and normally i'd tackle a job i've never done before with out hesitation or screwing it up, BUT i am afraid to touch that electronic 4L60E. is this kit hard to install? is it easy to screw up some how on the installation or anything i need to be careful of while installing it? reason why im asking is cause none of my transmission shops around here want to mess with it, for a reasonable price that is ($550-$650 on average!). Also when you put it in, is the only thing you have to do to the computer is turn off the torque managment so it wont stumble when it shifts? is there anything else i need to do tuning wise to the computer? i appreciate any and all help.
Re: Trans go shift kit question
I put one in my '96 GMC truck. It's not hard to do, but the instructions that came in the kit are not the easiest to follow. What helped me a lot was to have the GM service manual to use along with the instructions. The tech line phone numbers are always busy, but when I was finally able to get through, they were pretty good with answering my questions. The first question I had was how come the video that came with the kit didn't seem to correspond to the written instructions? Answer: "Oh, you can't go by the video, the kit has been upgraded several times since the video was made. It's just there to give you an idea of how to do it." Nice of them to finally reveal that to me
.
I don't know about the torque management (I don't have that in the truck), but I didn't do anything at all to the PCM. After all is said and done, the kit works great. Nice firm shifts, and no driveability issues at all. Glad I did it
.
Install tips: (1) make sure the car is high enough for you to get in and out from under it easily, you'll be doing that a lot (2) have a nice clean workbench to lay out all the parts on, I set up a sheet of plywood on a couple of sawhorses covered with heavy construction paper (3) be very careful when you pull out the retaining clips that hold the servo valves in the valve body, some of them have the springs behind the valve and you don't want to launch the parts down the driveway like I did.
