Tranny Swap Question
Tranny Swap Question
I am going to swap my t56 tranny and parts out of my car and go to a turbo 400 by cpt here shortly because it will be a little more consistant with my setup and can handle the power. My question is I know I need the tranny. But what else would I need to do the full swap. Is there any electrical harnesses needed? Would a brake pedal system off a auto 97 firebird bolt up and work with on my 93? What about the shifter, what year shifter and cables do I need? I know Ill need an auto crossmember. Does bmr or any of those companys make an aftermarket one thats stronger?

Re: Tranny Swap Question
Is cpt supplying the pan, dipstick (need a Lokar), cooler (there's no tranny cooler in your T56 radiator), and a flexplate (to replace the flywheel)?
For what? A TH400 is a manual tranny, with no electronics. Are you getting a fully automatic setup, or a reverse pattern manual valve body? Will you be using a trans brake?
You will have to address the speedometer/VSS problem. On a 94-97 car its a matter of using a VSS sensor from a mid-90's Chevy/GMC truck to provide the correct VSS signal, then reflashing the PCM as an A4 rather than an M6, so it uses interprets the 40 pulse/ev output of the auto tranny reluctor wheel, rather than running the 17 pulses/rev output from the T56. But since you have a 93, I don't know how you interface the VSS to your ECM. You're actually fortunate that you have a 93, because your 93 ECM has no electronic interface for the 4L60, so you won't be getting codes for all the missing electronic interfaces that those of us with 94 and newer LT1's have.
You can remove your clutch pedal, weld a small plate on your brake pedal to accept a standard GM wide power brake pad for an automatic.
Need to know if its fully automatic or manual valve body.
Actually, you need your stock T56 crossmember, and can modify if by slotting the tranny mount mounting holes if you use a short tailshaft TH400, or add an extension if you use the slightly longer tailshaft TH400. Which one are you using?

Check their catalogs.
If you plan on running fast enough, you may need an SFI-rated bellhousing for the tranny (JW Utlra Bell) and an SFI-rated tranny case shield or blanket.
You may need a new driveshaft, depending on the exact tranny you use and what rear axle you will be running.
