Tranny/Shift Kit Question!

Alright, so my transmission blew out on Friday and I need to fix it and I was thinking of upgrading the shift kit too.

First off - would you recommend putting a used in or getting a rebuild? Also what prices should I expect - I think he said 1200 for a used one installed? how much should I expect for a rebuild?

Also - I need to decide on a shift kit. I either want to go with the B&M Transpak or the Transgo shift kit.... I've read a lot on here already about the controversy of the two and how they work but I really just would like to know peoples personal experiences with them and which one they like better. Also where is a good place to order the kits for a good price?

Thanks!

In my area labor rates are about $65-$70 per hour. Typical remove and replace labor(with fluid) averages $350. New reman torque converter (stock) is about $150. Parts and labor to overhaul trans (stock) runs about $800

OK, are you any good with basic mechanics and do you have decent hand tools? See Javier's conveter install page for tranny removal instructions, it's rather easy to do...

If so then I say save the money on labor and you and maybe a few of your buddies pull the tranny, send it out to be rebuilt correctly to eliminate some of GM's faults. I would never trust a used tranny for these cars because they are known to be weak from the factory and I know if you go with CPT they can build it to last and also dial in the shifts per your requirements with an in house custom shift setup (that's the same as a shift kit, but not in kit form for resale). I have only heard bad things about TG shift kits on a relativly stock 4l60e, and they are known to make a bad tranny go down hill even quicker. Hope this helps you out...

I would go with a Transgo shiftkit. B&M only blocks accumulators to make the trans shift hard. The Transgo Kit corrects trouble ares of the 4l60e and also makes it shift great.

Yes...Trans Go shift kits modify just enough in the transmission to turn it into a pile of burnt parts.

$1200 for a used transmission? We sell our "Race" 4L60E for $1000 + hard parts, (if any) based on your supplied core. We were getting $225 for an F-Body R&R.
Don't sweat which shift kit. If you send your transmission to us, we know enough about them that we know what modifications to make to provide great shifts and maximum durability.
Feel free to do a search about our customer satisfaction, and history on here. Our web page is in the link below. You can also give me a call...302-250-1202.

Thanks,
Frank
