tranny removal question

Ok, I'm getting ready to start removing the transmission in my '99 Z28 M6. Do I have to remove the tranny with the bellhousing attached and go through all the hassle of getting to the op 2 bolt in the bellhousing, or can I unbolt the transmission from the bellhousing and the remove the bellhousing?

Unbolt the trans from the bell housing and remove it first.

I've the all eight bolts out of the tranny and it still won't budge. I'm guessing it's either the input shaftis stuck or the tranny may be seized to the bellhousing. Does anyone know of any tricks to get it loose or anywhere I can pry it loose?

Just take the bellhousing bolts loose from the motor... It's not that hard. You need a 9/16 swivel socket and a long extension.

You should be able to wiggle it loose by moving it around. It could be a little stuck on the guide pins. Don't forget to pull the shift fork out.

The LS1 doesn't have a clutch fork. The slave cylinder is bolted to the front cover, concentric with the input shaft, and pushes directly on the T/O bearing to release the clutch. Did you take the hydraulic line off the slave cyliner?

Yeah everything is off. I put some of the transmission to bellhousing bolts back in and took out all of the bellhousing to block bolts. I've taken the starter off too. Now I'm trying to remove the tranny and bellhousing all in one piece and can't get it to come out. All it will do is seperate from the bottom a little bit. I'm guessing the input shaft is stuck in the pilot bearing. Any suggestions?

The bolts are metric and using a 9/16'' socket on them could round off the heads.

First make darn sure that you have all of the bolts out. Then hook the clutch hydraulic line back up and push the clutch pedal down a few times. Often the pressure against the pressure plate will push a stuck trans off of the dowels.

My dad and I got it out tonight. We had to take the transmission loose from the bellhousing first and pull it out. Even with the tranny out it was still a job to get the bellhousing off of the dowel pins. I had no idea they could get that stuck on there.
