Tranmission Swap - Help!

My tranmission in my 95' Formula V8 A4 is failing. I know its bad, I had two shops give me estimates. They both said 900-1500 dollars. Well, I figure I will just buy a used one and swap it in myself with the help of a few friends.

Does anyone know how I can go about getting information on how to perform the "swap". I have already searched but was unable to find any information. I have that crappy Haynes book which seems to provide as little detail on topics as possible.

Perhaps there is a sight that covers in-depth the swap of the transmission.

Will a 94' Z28 A4 work in my car?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just did mine in my 93 twice. It's not that bad, just time consuming. Make sure you have at least a 2 foot long extension for your ratchet, makes it much nicer to get the bellhousing bolts out

Yes, I got the car on 4 jackstands, get it as high as you possibly can. The higher, the easier to get the tranny out from underneath.

I didn't have mine quite high enough, so after I lowered it down on the tranny jack, I had to slide it off the jack and onto the ground

Well, I am going to have a machine lift so I will be able to get the car pretty high. I am not highly mechanically inclined, however I have changed my brakes, alternator, battery, intake, and a few other simple things. I have a friend who did a motor swap on his mitsubishi eclipse who is gonna help me the whole way through.

About on average how much time does a job like this take?

R&R at a dealership I think they charge for 6.5 hours of labor.

I had mine out in like 4, in in a little less time

Are there any sites that might have a run through of all that will be needed to complete my project?
