Re: Tourqe Arm / Noise

My little brother's 95 formie, with around 430 rwhp, just broke its second stock torque arm. We are looking for something to stand up to this power leaving the line at around 3000 rpm's. We were looking at this exact torque arm but it doesn't sound very safe. The car has long tubes and a dump out of the y pipe so that extra road noise doesn't scare me. But, I am very concerned about the clunking and the car darting all over the place when you get off the gas. Please suggest something reliable.

Thanks!

I use the Spohn TA at 600+ rwHP, and the car is as stable as it could possibly be... no wandering or darting. I've seen the same Spohn TA (with one extra diagonal brace) take a 3,525# 30th SS convertible to 8.50@160+MPH, with a 1.30 60-ft. It will take anything you can throw at it.

Is your bar noisey too? Mine is noisey enough I think I may remove and sell it.

Do you have clunking when you shift? Tunnel mount? Tranny mount? Price? Where to buy?
Thanks,
Steve

Clunking when shifting? Or road noise?

Re: Tourqe Arm / Noise

You can hear the gear lash when you put it in gear, or shift to reverse. But under normal driving, I don't notice anything severe in the way of noise. But the entire rear suspension is rod ends, including the TA, LCA's, Spohn race version sway bar and the panhard rod. Any noise is sort of covered up by the sound of the dual 3" pipes and Borla shorty mufflers dumping in front of the rear axle.

I have the Spohn chassis mount torque arm, with the rod end, and a driveshaft loop. All of my Spohn parts come directly from Spohn and Steve Spohn installed most of them, often as a test install, and to get some photos of the installed parts and to develop install instructions. It uses an older style dropped front mount, because I used to run a 4" Mufflex.

When the car was a daily driver, I used the poly front mount on the torque arm, and that helped keep the noise down. But noise that comes from properly functioning performance parts doesn't bother me.

The torque arm is not causing the darting, that has to be something else suspension related. I run the same tunnel mounted arm with no issues like that and I have never heard of this either. Like Ijunineer has said, it is either Panhard bar, bushings or could even be shocks. It sounds like the problem is being blamed on the last item that was installed when it return it has to be something else I would be sure.

As for the clunking, that is the pivot point. That torque arm is designed to pivot during accel and decel. If the bolts are not torgued correctly or over torqued it may take more force to less force to move them causing a noise or clunk. It is not unsafe like you think, it is pretty normal with this set-up

The darting is most likely coming from the Detroit locker locking and unlocking.

Re: Tourqe Arm / Noise

I've also found that on the street, with my 315 BFG Drag Radials, if there are any ruts in the road surface at all - and NJ asphalt roads ALL have grooves from the 18-wheeler tires - the back end will dart a bit as the edges of the tires move in the grooves. There's always a little bit of irregular motion, even driving under low load because of the wide tires. But put it under full throttle, full torque and the tires dance all over in the grooves.

At the track, with 28" slicks, it becomes a non-issue.... launches straight and stays straight all the way down the track.

No problem at all, I am just glad you got it working correctly. The tunnel mounted torque arms can be tricky to set-up at times. I will be sure to tell Jerry you got it fixed and taken care of, he was asking me today if I have heard back from you yet.

Thanks again!
