TH400 & Gearvendor

has any body put these in a f-body, my 4l60e is dead again after 21000 miles, it was build with all the goodies in it, lasted about two years, not bad, but I want one to last longer. I am getting a rebuild again to get back on the road, but the next time I want to put a th400 & gearvendor overdrive unit in, I think the cost would be worth it, the th400 from what I have seen would hold up very well and the overdrive unit would be great. total cost would be around 3500, that's three rebuilds in the 4l60e or 60k miles for me the way I drive. I read about putting in a 4l80e, but there were lots of problems with shifting and clearance, and still not as strong as the th400, and the gearvendor would let you run 411 or 456 gears and still get good mileage.

I have a TH400 with a GV O/D. Works fine. The 0.78 O/D could be a bit steeper for the street, but it works as a "4th" gear at the track. I thought a new GV was around $2,500. I bought mine for about 1/2 that, used. It comes with a bunch of electronics to control when it can be engaged, etc, but I didn't use any of that. I have a rocker switch to engage it on the highway, and a pushbutton on the shifter to engage it at the track.

The biggest problem with the setup is WEIGHT. I'd guess the GV adds about 50#. That's why I got it cheap.... original owner was putting his car an a massive diet.

Also eliminated my custom 3" Y-pipe, because it occupied the same space. And Steve Spohn had to mount the DS loop on the torque arm itself, rather than on the front mount, because the end of the GV is past the front TA mount.
