synthetic vs. non-synthetic oil for manual trans

I had (probably - bougth the 2002 z28 a month ago) factory oil in my transmission. The shifting felt a little notchy, and after hearing a few people swear by Redline MTL, I put it in my transmission. First night I didn't really notice any difference, but next day (especially since it was a little colder in the morning) I realized that it is even more notchy. I also notice more metal- feeling, especially when going into second gear. Having Hurst shifter probably contributes to the notchy/metal feeling, but I am sure the oil change made it worse.
Now, it is bothering me enough to want to change the oil again, however, I am wondering what to use. I'll definitelly go with Dexron III spec, but should I go with synthetic or not and what brand is a good one???
Does anyone have experience with what oil makes Z28's shift smoother?

I used GM Synchromesh available at any GM dealer in my Integra that had a 3rd gear synchro going bad and it made it shift like butter.

I will be using that in my Z when I get ready for spring.

Rockland Gear recommends GM Syncromesh also, so thats what i put in their tranny when i got it. I haven't had any problems. Supposed to be pretty good stuff.

I changed from GM fluid to Redline at 50K miles and the friction material came unglued from my synchro ring, requiring a rebuild. I'm only using the GM stuff from now on.
