stripped threads on the short shifter mounting plate
When i bought my firebird, the b&m short shifter was already installed by the previous owner so i can only guess how long its been on. The last couple months i noticed that after shifting into second and letting out the clutch, sometimes it would pop out of gear. I figured that the gear had a couple chipped teeth or something was wrong with the synchros. the last week and a half i noticed that shifting from 2-3 there was a lot of side to side play in the shifter.
well just yesterday i had it in third and was going to shift into 4th and i heard a clunk and the shifter dropped a half inch and just wobbled freely.
Had it towed to the trans shop to find out this morning that the 4 female bolt threads on the trans cover had completely stripped out. he said the male mounting bolts were the wrong size and over time with heat and metal expanding it just stripped out.the tech redrilled and tapped and used helicoil to remount the shifter. Now it shifts perfectly and havent had it shift this crisp and smoothly in months
. How many of you have had similar problems with the fbodies, short shifters or other vehicles?
