Street twin floater adjustment

Mcleod told me that by measureing the clutch thickness and subtract it from stock ,that by removing the proper shim(s) on the floater, I can bring my worn discs back into proper specs. Anyone tried this ? Otherwise its shipping ALL components back for a 300.00 rebuild. That may be necessary after I pull things apart and see whats worn, but the idea is intresting.
