Cool strange rear axle code

Ok. My 88 rear differential blew apart after 275,000 miles and I replaced it with a 86 rear diff and I can't find any specs from the axle code 9JB C0511. I mean anywhere on the web. Isthis some kind of special axle I've never heard of? I'm positive that I'm reading the stamping correctly.. Maybe the 86 Z I took it from didn't have this one originally either? How can I find the specs?? Please help.

Re: strange rear axle code

The first 3 places "9JB" are the important ones. The "C" indicates it was assembled at a plant in Buffalo. "051" indicates it was assembled on the 51st day of the year, and the last "1" indicates it was assembled on the day shift.

9JB is the hard part to find, since it's not listed in this table:

Thirdgen Rearend Data

Maybe you can find something close, that could be explained away by how clear the numbers were that you read off the axle tube.

What "specs" are you after. The 3-place code would indicate the gear ratio and whether it's an open diff of a posi. You can determine that by pulling the cover.
