Re: steel or aluminum flywheel?

if you drag race....steel

if you autoX or road race....alum

i put a fidanza lightweight aluminum FW on my cammed LS1 with a Spec 4 clutch.
it's a little tricky starting in first...the touchy low rpm characteristics of the big cam compounded by the light flywheel makes it VERY easy to stall.

but DAMN does it rev fast

since the car is cammed, and i am running poly motor and trans mounts...i also noticed an increase in felt vibration when driving. nothing terrible but it took some getting use to.

and this should be in the "drivetrain" forum

Re: steel or aluminum flywheel?

anyone know where the best place to get a steel flywheel is? ALso, will Autozones 40 dollar flywheel with a 100 dollar core work? Now that I am putting in a nice clutch i dont want to mess it up with a cheap flywheel but if autozones flywheel will not be any worse or better than a factory setup it is real tempting.

if it calls for a core, that probably means the one you get from them is just a resurfaced stocker.

if you're getting a new clutch you should always resurface the flywheel. call the local machine shops, they can probably do it for cheaper than the autozone deal.

check ebay for flywheels. i got my fidanza aluminum FW for about $60 cheaper cost and free shipping.
