Is a stall converter bad for your trans?

I've been doing a little reading about which stall converter to get, still undecided, and have come across a couple of posts about people debating weather or not a stall converter is bad for your trans. Is it? I know a stall makes more heat so a transcooler is absolutely needed. Also I read that a stall makes your shifts way softer so a shift kit is a good idea. But are these just bandaids on a bigger problem which is the stall converter?

I have not had my stall very long so I can't tell you for sure it won't cause problems down the line but it has not yet, but my shifts have not gotten softer at all after putting in the stall either and I don't have a shift kit

I've got a b&m super trans cooler already. Anyone ever take the proper precautions and still have their trans fail because of the stall?

Re: Is a stall converter bad for your trans?

If you keep the temps down, a higher stall converter can actually be BETTER for your trans under part throttle. Think about it, the slipping of the converter absorbs a lot of the shock during the shifts... rather than your clutch packs and band taking on the engine's torque by themselves (IOW- they slip much less before fully engaging compared to what they normally would with the stock converter). Heat is the main issue though. Under WOT i don't think there would be much difference.

do a search for "I just did a shift kit and" and you will see that it isn't hard to do and it is easy to screw something up! But if you don't have any problems with taking your time and knowing exactly what you took out of where and put it back correctly, then you shouldn't have a problem.
