SS 10 bolt strength

Got a 20k miles $1,000 option SS rear in my car out of a 96SS with red line gear oil in it and a AAR cover and LCA brackets. I am hoping to make 420rwhp by the end of the season and have a stall with it. Should I be ok or should I be carefull on launches? Its a nice rear, low miles and not just a regular junk yard ten bolt so I don't want to blow it if I don't have to.

Re: SS 10 bolt strength

It still has the same size gears and axles as any other ten bolt in any camaro, including V6s..... And I assume when you say it's the 1000$ option rear axle that it has the auburn heavy duty posi in it. The posi is better (although perhaps still not better than the torsen), but those axles and gears are still a liability. It could still break easily if you hook the car. Since you have an auto though, chances are it should be ok for a little while.

Re: SS 10 bolt strength

Well I was going to run street tires just so I know I will not hook (don't have the best tires in the world...) becuase I would like to enjoy the heads and cam for a while and not blow it the first time out and have to get another 2k for a 12 bolt. I might just launch it really easy untill it gets close to the end of the season and I don't have to worry about it blowing. Easy launches will prevent me from going 11's but I would rather that then the car being down most if not all the season while I try and save for another rear.

Getting the 10 bolt to live is a crap shoot...Its more likely to survive an A4 car because they are less hard on parts at launch. In my case I have been running 420rwhp thru a 10 bolt for 10 years with the only breakage being a worn out Auburn. Switched to a Pro series Auburn 6 years ago and no troubles since. That's with stock axles, GM 3.42s, and BFG DRs. I do change the fluid every year and use the GM additive. I did just add a Summit girdle from Spohn just to make fluid changes easier. You can throw the whole parts book at the 10 bolt, but it simply will not make the 7.5" ring gear and pinion any larger. This is where the weakness is...

Best ever 60' of 1.60...usually in the low 1.70s, though...As long as your tires spin a little you should be ok...the 275 40 R17s (BFG DRs) spin just enough to avoid a boom....
