Spohn Torque Arm?

does anyone on here have the spohn torque arm with double drivshaft loops?? I am wondering how much clearance there is with them. I want to lower my car an inch later. I would like to use double driveshaft loop if possible. I know it's probably not really needed, but i want it anyway if possible. The driveshaft never breaks at the rear does it-at the yoke? I have always been told/seen it at the front.

If no one answers your question email Steve Spohn. He has always gotten back to me very quickly. Great to deal with...

Yea i'll probably end up talking to him. I just want to know the usual clearance with it. I know they do not recomend it, with lowering, but i don't daily drive this car.....it's my weekend car....so i stay out of steep inclines at gas stations and stuff.

Right off of Spohn's website in teh TQ arm section:

NOTE: Do not get a rear driveshaft safety loop if your car is lowered, or if you have an SLP "Loud-Mouth" cat-back exhaust system.

I know what it says on the site.....i want to make my own judgement call on if it's good for me or not. like i said this car sees flat pavement only.

Yeh.... what the he!! does Steve Spohn know about these things

I have my front loop welded to the side of the Spohn TA (the tailshaft of the Gear Vendor prevents the loop from being in the "normal" location), and you can see how it fits with a 3" diameter DS. That loop was hand-fitted to the car, by Steve. The clearance is maybe 3/4" at the closest point.

http://cjcfo.fbody.com/members/injun.../DCP03672a.jpg

The front loop is required by NHRA regs, to prevent the front of the DS from digging into the track and "pole vaulting" the car into the air. A failure of the rear yoke/u-joint will not have such severe consequences, but "yes", the rear yoke/joints do break, and the DS whipping around will make quite a mess of the underside of the car.

HUH???

That's what i thought. Yea i don't want to take the rear out of my car--not that i will be doing that anytime soon.

So you say it will be aroud 3/4" lower than my driveshaft??? If that's the case then how come you can't lower your car? My B&B exhaust is like an 1 inch lower than my drive shaft. I guess it will be okay then. I guess your not suppose to put long-tube headers on when you lower it either...but people do and are just fine.

No, I didn't say the loop will be 3/4" lower than the DS. I said the clearance between the walls of the DS and the inside diameter of the loop is at least 3/4" all the way around. That number could change slightly if you lower the car, and then have to move the pinion to correct the pinion angle. Remember - when you drop the car, the front TA mount drops, but the rear TA mount doesn't. The nose of the pinion just rotates down.

I suspect what Steve is concerned about (and again, like the others, I'd suggest you e-mail his "tech" line for info) is the body contacting the rear loop. As the body drops, the clearance for the rear TA mount disappears. A 5" loop sticking out the side of the TA will be ripe for the DS tunnel dropping hard into it when you hit a bump..... I don't think he's worried about the loop hitting the ground or reducing ground clearance.... its the DS tunnel contacting the loop.

Sure, people with LT's lower their cars, and then they drive V-E-R-Y carefully over speed bumps and still manage to scrape them all up.... but it appears you've already made up your mind, so go for it. Good luck.

Ah i see what you saying. Thanks for the info. I guess i'll have to crawly under there and see how much clearance there is up top?? Stiffer spring rates will not need as much clearance though.

It's not that i have made up my mind yet, i just like to challage ideas....because no one has every idea eactly right there is always a way to make something work. Advice is not always correct....i don't just take advice blindly and follow it--that's how hypertech sells their programmers lol

I guess no one's ever tried it out for sure.......guess i'll have to do it
