Oh wow at 40 a downshift to 2nd would easily put you in that RPM range and depending on tuning and how you had the car tuned for those gears (assuming it has been tuned for those gears) Next time you do it take note of how many gears are above it its as it shifts up. I would be your betting a 4-2 and depending on tuning it may even be trying to do a 4-1 the a sudden jump back to 2nd I have felt that before I used to do it intentionally when roll racing throw it down to a gear thats to low then quickly upshift to the next gear at very high RPM some people refer to it as the "sweet spot" because of the way it revs then lurches forward during the shift ,

I didnt want to get into the soup with those guys but the op seemed to be describing a 4...1...2 shift sequence.
