so i serviced my tranny today

serviced my tranny today, the fluid was pretty burnt. it was brown, stunk up the whole garage. there was a descent amount of debris in the filter and on the magnet. its from a 93 with 130k on it. i have no idea if its the original tranny or not. is this bad? do i have to worry about my tranny taking a dump on me?

Brown isn't too bad, prob just hasn't been serviced in a long time. How much longer it goes just depends on what kind of material was in the pan and how you drive it. If the fluid was full of sludge theres most likely not too much paper left on your clutch plates, metal in the pan could be from a variety of things. If you don't beat on it, (nobody here does that right?) you might get a few more seasons out of it. Just keep on driving untill it starts slipping or you loose a few gears.

Brown fluid and burnt smell are both signs your transmission is on it's way out. The metal is a definite sign of this...

I get $1000 + hardparts for a race 700 or 4L60E....Using your core. This price includes all the performance parts. "Hardparts" are parts not usually replaced in a normal rebuild IE drums, pump, planetaries, etc. There's a good chance you wouldn't need any of these parts, but I like to warn people upfront. For that $1000 you get a 700 or 4L60E that's capable of going into the mid 10's.

If you're going to compare prices, make sure you compare similar products. I use both a billet 1-2 servo and a Sonnax "Super Hold" 4TH servo. These 2 pieces alone are almost $100 a piece. Add to that a set of $70 Raybestos "blue" 3-4 frictions, and $30 Kolene coated 3-4 steels. It's definitely not wise to let a general transmission rebuilder rebuild a racing 700/4L60E, either. I can assure you there's alot more involved than throwing a shift kit in one. What I know, I've learned over a 14 year period of R&D.
When you mention 700 or 4L60E and the word "racing" in the same sentence to most transmission builders, they quiver...LOL
