Skip Shift Solenoid
Skip Shift Solenoid
Hey guys, I''m debating on buying a 96 Z28 but it won't pass inspection due to the SES light on and the Skip shift solenoid code being thrown. The guy put the resistor on the harness to attempt to by-pass the skip shift module but the car is still throwing the code even after he reset it a few times. Finally today he brought it to a mechanic and said the car would need a new solenoid at the cost of $325 (part + 2 Hours labor). After digging thru the archive of posts I've learned that if you put the resistor in, there would be no need for the solenoid and the code should stop being thrown... But its still throwing the code.
HELP! to buy or not to buy..
Btw were talking about New Jersey Inspection here.
Edit: Heres some more about the car.

Did you check the fuse for the skip shift solenoid? What resistance did he install? Did he check the continuity of the wires from the PCM to the skip shift harness connector? If any of those is faulty, you will get the code. If they are all correct, you should not get the code.
A new solenoid does not cost anywhere near that, and the install is very simple.... nowhere near $325.

yeah the solenoid is something like $85 dollars on GM parts direct but the shop was going to charge him 2 hours of labor to put the new one in.. To me it looks like a 45 minute job max so I told him not to pay it and I'll be picking the car up tomorrow and I'll just buy the SLP skip shift kit and hope it fixes it. Otherwise I'm just going to take the car to my uncle and get it passed for some pocket change.
edit: The mechanic said the wireing and resistor were correct.

Took the car today to my uncles place to have him check out the car and he played with it for about 6 hours and couldnt fix it. The tranny was rebuilt and he thinks maybe something from the inside may not be hooked up properly or a faulty ground. So I'll be taking it back up to him next week to tare apart the tranny. Even with solenoid plugged in it skip shift doesn't work so I'll by a new solenoid this week before we tare the tranny to peices.
Thanks for the Advice, but I'm going to have to take the tranny apart and fix Reverse. its Nowhere to be found... Anyway back on the skip shift subject, its very strange. With the skip shift plugged in, it doesn't work, nor does the light come on. When you put the resistor in the light on the dash board comes on.. VERY strange. I guess I'll take a look on shbox.com for a wiring diagram.
What's wrong with reverse? Is it difficult to move the lever to the right to get it into the slot? That could be a problem with the reverse lockout solenoid. Powered off the same fuse as the skip-shift solenoid.
I'll check the fuse tomorrow.. The last owner said he checked it but maybe he didn't.. As for reverse I'm able to move the stick all the way over and push it into reverse.. but it pops back out and never engages into gear. Sometimes If I rock the car I'm able to get it into reverse just like some older cars that I've owned. (Especially the 1979 International School Bus ive driven.. wow was that fun creaming redline on every shift and still held up with 360,000 miles on the clock when I bought it. Not a diesel either. If I recall it was a big block and boy did it love screaming at redline around 4000rpm but sounded like 7000rpm.. Ah the good 'ol days)
