I used to shift from 1st to 3rd. It saved gas vs going to 2nd and had more power than going to 4th.

If I read your original question right, it appears you think that when the "skip shift" light comes on, it is telling you to shift for better fuel economy. It isn't coming on to tell you to shift. It's coming on to tell you the engine is operating in the RPM/throttle position range that will cause the solenoid to block 2nd and 3rd IF you try to shift. It supposedly improves fuel economy by forcing you to shift to 4th, instead of 2nd. But it isn't telling you that its the right time to shift for better fuel economy. And nothing should "grind".

well then im guessing this is just probably my own fault. probably not pushing the clutch in all the way or letting out too soon. Ive probably got about 5 hours experience driving this car. Its been a garage king since i got it.
