Skip shift help T-56
I'm looking for a way to get rid of the skip shift on my T-56. I've heard that I can just unplug the wires and stick a resistor between the two. Does anyone know if this works for sure and shich resistance I need to use. I've heard 2.2K but no one knows.
Thanks.
Thanks.
There are several ways to disable skip shift.
1. Just unplug the solenoid. Your PCM will register a trouble code, but everything else will be fine. I think ODBII cars will turn on the Service Engine Soon light; not sure about that.
2. Unplug and insert a resistor. I'm sure someone here knows the resistance -- I don't know what it is. The resistor will fool the PCM into thinking it's still connected, so you won't get the trouble code.
3. Unplug, then connect an aftermarket skip-shift disable kit. They cost about $20, and consist of a resistor on a plug that's matches the solenoid, so that you get a good connection and a good seal against the elements. The previous owner of my car bought one of these, so that's what I have. It works fine. The Skip Shift light still comes on (and will do so for any of options 1-3), but I can go straight into second gear anyway.
4. Disable skip-shift in the PCM. Any mail-order tuner can do this. Most handheld tuners (HyperTech, Predator, etc) can do it. Laptop tuning software like LT1-Edit can do it. This is the only method that prevents the light on the dash from coming on.

The resistor is 2.2Kohms. I got a pack of 5 at Radio Shack for like a dollar. I had CAGS edited out so I don't know what will show up with the resistor in there and no tune, but I know if you just unplug CAGS you will get an SES light with OBD2.
Helps to provide the year of the PCM. As noted above, 94/95 PCM you can just unplug the harness connector.... gives you DTC 84, but no adverse affects. 96/97 you get a code and the SES light. In both cases, the resistor will avoid the code and light.
this is going to be a stupud question.. but I just got my camaro friday and only had one day to drive it before the trans went out.
what is skip shift?
the car wll only let you go into 4th sometimes?.. when, why?

Skip shift is a function of the transmission in which a solenoid engages and blocks access to 2nd and 3rd gear.
It happens when the following conditions are met:
1. The engine has reached operating temperature.
2. You're in first gear
3. Your speed is between 14 and 19 MPH.
4. Your throttle position is no more than 33% (I'm not totally sure about the percentage there, but it's close to that).
Basically, if you're in first and you're not accelerating very hard, it'll have you shift into 4th as soon as 4th is a viable choice.
The feature exists to improve fuel economy. It is the reason that T56-equipped LT1 and LS1 Camaros and Corvettes were not flagged as "gas guzzlers", thereby saving you several hundred dollars in gas guzzler tax at the point of purchase.
ohh. I see.. well that cheep of GM to do to us.. good thing we have many options to disable it.
Here is what happened to my trans:
