Lightbulb Skip Shift eliminator … a waste of $$$???

I never asked this question before and I have never seen it answered (I did a search). What is difference between simply unplugging the CAGS connector from the trans and using an eliminator? I do know that my T56 has been disconnected for the last 12 years and 100k miles and I have never had a problem with it. When I bought my car new in December of ’93, I drove it straight to my garage to disconnect the skip shift solenoid and it has be disconnected and flapping in the wind ever since. And I have never ever had a CAGS SES light come on or any other problem. I simply do not believe any special item is needed other that a hand and a couple of fingers needed to pull the plug. Just thought I would offer my .02 cents on the Skip Shift Eliminator Scam.

Thanks, Shimaze

hmm...i was thinking the 93s didn't have skip shift...

but for the $1 it costs to buy the resistor from radio shack...not sure how it can be wasted money. i think on the later cars there was a dash light associated with the cags if you just unplugged it.

either way...even the skip shift eliminator plug that sells for $25 is worth it i think...yeah its an over priced resistor...but its well worth it to get rid of that crappy skip shift

I say just save yourself the hastle and get the overpriced skip shift eliminator. Or I think if you get your computer tuned they can take it out for you...not totaly sure on that.

On 94 (what he has... not a 93 ) and 95 models, you can pull the harness connector off, and it works fine. It sets a DTC code in the PCM, but does not turn on the SES light. For 96 and newer OBD-II models, disconnecting the harness connector turns on the SES light, so you need to plug the 2Kohm resistor into the connector, or buy a skip shift eliminator to avoid the SES light.

Injuneer, you said it best. Thanks for the answer, it has been on my mind for quite some time. And yes, the 1993 T56 did not have the skip shift. That was a "mandatory option" only on the 1994 & later T56's. I ordered my '94 Z/28 in July of '93 and it arrived in December of '93. Sorry about the confusion. Thanks, Shimaze

Re: Skip Shift eliminator … a waste of $$$???

I did the same thing with my 94.... bought it brand new, drove it for about a week, decided I couldn't stand "skip shift", and pulled the harness connector off. Drove it for several years that way.

I eventually put the resistor in the connector, because I ran a ScanMaster full-time in the dash, and didn't want the DTC 84 code popping up all the time. The T56 is long gone, and the stock PCM runs very little in the car, other than idle air, the fuel pump and the speedometer, but the "Skip Shift" light still lights up on the dash..... obviously ignored with the TH400 and reverse pattern manual valve body....

Re: Skip Shift eliminator … a waste of $$$???

I just got my PCM tuned at madz28.com finally and put it in (yes, i had 6-speed in the order) and it says on the receipt that skip shift is eliminated. it was before and i wanted to make sure the new pcm was tuned for it as well. so i put it in and start the car up (in my garage) and i can only shift in 1st and 4th, i can't back up out of my drive way because reverse doesn't work. i have a '95 so i though just unplugging the harness from the skip shift (correct me if i'm wrong but isn't this the same as the reverse lockout on the drivers side below the shifter?) would solve this, but it didn't. now i can't drive out of my garage unless i put the old pcm back in which i wanted to at least drive around the block once. help?!

Not sure exactly what you meant by that question.... but if you are asking if the reverse lockout and the ship sift solenoid are the same connection, or device, the answer is "no".

Is there any possibility that what you did was disconnect the reverse lockout solenoid? That would make it difficult to move the shifter to the right to engage reverse, but you can strong-arm it.

when i got my 97 ss, i'm guessing someone disconnected it or something cause the skipshift doesn't work, but the skip shift light still comes on but nothing happens. is it supposed to still come on or stay off?

The skip shift light will continue to come on, even it you have disconnected the skip shift solenoid.

The PCM turns on the light when it sees the combination of RPM/TPS/MAP that it would use to activate the skip shift solenoid. Its not a verification that the skip shift is working, only that the operating conditions that would activate skip shift have been met.

As noted in my earlier post, my "skip shift" light still comes on, and the T56 was replaced with a TH400 about 5 years ago.

Thanks Injuneer, took out the correct harness and skip shift is off now...but I'm getting another pcm sent to me because that was supposed to be eliminated and wasn't.
