Angry Shipping transmission by UPS. Problems...

So I packed up my transmission in a Rubbermaid storage container to ship to Frank at CPT. Took it to the UPS facility, and they turned it down. They said the tub wasn't strong enough, and if it was turned over, the lid would break. There's damn near an entire roll of duct tape holding this thing shut! I informed him that transmissions are shipped to CPT everyday this way through UPS. Also told him that I needed "This Side Up" and "Fragile" stickers put on the side. He said that UPS doesn't pay attention to that stuff, so that wouldn't help anything. So, he runs and gets his little manager, and he backs the clerk up on his decision not to ship it.

What the hell am I supposed to do now?

Go to a different UPS, or a fedex freight.

I shipped a 4l60E for under just under $110 with fedex freight, I brought it to them in no box or anything, and they strapped it sown on a small pallett and shipped it out.

I shipped a transmission back to the person I bought it from with UPS because it had some problems, and I made a nice crate and everything and had it strapped down. The guy said it arrived in a plastic bag though.

Its true man...Coming from a loader at UPS, we dont pay attention to "fragile" or "this side up" in most cases...Theres just TOO many packages that pass through.. Ship it how THEY want you to...its in your packages best interest

Theres nothing that pisses me off more than seeing a package fall apart so easily because the shipper didnt take the time to package it right...Just saying..

I could show you guys HORRIFIC pictures of what your packages go through

Re: Shipping transmission by UPS. Problems...

I shipped my tranny to Frank using a Sterilite 45gal bin through UPS. $69, insured value $1500. Discounted through my job.

Shipment got delayed because they managed to break the transmission through the container and all the shrink-wrapping I had around it. Cracked the tailhousing and damaged the rear seal, and fluid was leaking all over.

He shipped it back via DHL, and it will be here Friday. I'll let you guys know if it makes it OK.

This is true, I've been sorting/tossing boxes around for six years at UPS. No one knows and know one cares what happens to whatever is inside the box. And if stuff falls out....we stuff it back in and retape it. Loading packages in 90+ degree weather in a 100+ degree trailer will make u do this. Whatever u ship, especially heavy things, make sure it will withstand dropping it from knees on a concrete floor. Cuz it will be dropped. And yes fragile means nothing we treat every package the same SHIP FED-EX!!!!!!!!

Re: Shipping transmission by UPS. Problems...

OK...Here's the insight on shipping to us.....First off...DON'T USE UPS!.
We've been packaging them in Sterilite 45 gallon containers with a plywood/1x3" "tray" for them. I make a "box" out of 1x3" wood that fits around the pan, and then attatch it to a piece of 11/32 plywood...That's cut to fit exactly inside the container floor. The container has wheels at one end, so your plywood will be 28"x15 1/2". The inside of your 1x3" box will measure 13 1/2" x 11 1/4". Screw the box together so that it is 3" tall. After you get the box secured to the plywood "floor", screw some "outriggers" to the plywood floor and use (4) 3 3/4"x9/16" screw eyes in them to run some heavy rope through. We use 2 at the front and 2 at the rear (at the tailhousing). We use scrap pieces of 2x4"s for our "outriggers".
We then attatch the top with duct tape, and mark it FRAGILE, and THIS SIDE UP. We ONLY ship through DHL now!

This shipping arrangement will keep the transmission from moving around inside the plastic Sterilite container. Usual weight of a DRAINED '60E with the container and wood is 145#.

I'm in the process of working on detailed instructions with pictures and drawings to add to our web page. Sorry it's not available yet.

My goods arrived today

As you can see, Frank did an excellent job packing it. Also, can anyone tell me in the 2nd to last pic what that thing is tied to the tranny? lol

Sure thing, Matt. That's your worn stator that we had to replace. I always like to send the bad parts back so the customer can see what they paid for. If you look in the front of your transmission, you'll see part of the stator sticking out, where the converter splines on.
