shifter spring to center

So, I've got a T-56 that originally came with the factory hurst shifter.

It would spring from the 1-2 gate to the 3-4 gate pretty much OK, but if you put it in the 5-6 gate (but not in a gear), it would STAY over to the right.

I pulled the shifter, manually moved the rail, and it felt smooth and clicked into all the gates equally. The shifter rail thingy does NOT spring back to center at all (I assume it's not supposed to, and that the shifter is what's supposed to do this).

ANyhow, I want my shifter to self-center. So I bought a pro 5.0.

It's WORSE!!! it really won't self center from the 1-2 gate (it's kinda sluggish about it, definately weaker than the hurst) and is totally stuck in the 5-6 gate (doesn't feel like it even tries to self center).

So I took it apart, and was totally dissapointed by the design, two silly little springs are supposed to push it to center with maybe half an inch of leverage. I tried various combos of shims on the springs, and i can get 1-2 to center almost acceptable, but no dice on 5-6 to center.

what gives? is the ripper any better? I want a positive centering force from either side of the 3-4 gate! Or are t56s not supposed to center from 5-6? (I have never driven any other t56's).

help...
