shift light 4 automatic?
shift light 4 automatic?
is it at all possible to put a shift light on an automatic? When i run my car at the track, it seems to shift harder when i do it myself rather than letting the car shift itself (custom shift kit) but i only get a good time when i dont bounce my tack... is there something out there to tell me when to shift just before i hit my rev limit? thanks!
Re: shift light 4 automatic?
Jeremiah,
Yes it is possable. It would work the same way as if it were in an M6. However, you may have yourself setup the wrong way. The car should perform best when it shifts by itself. Even with a shift light, there is no way that you will be able to make it accurate enough that you will benefit for E.T. Any custom shift kit that allows you to do so isn't telling you the truth. Bottom line is, let the car do the work itself. In the long run you'll only end up hurting your times with a setup like that.

what kind of shift light do I need to be looking for then?I just want to be able to know when to shift JUST BEFORE my rev limit takes over. Can I take just any one? or is there just one for an auto trans...? p/n? where to buy? thanks alot Eddie
Re: shift light 4 automatic?
I think what he is trying to say is that you shouldn't manually shift your auto tranny. It will be far more consistant if you let the tranny do what it was designed to do. If you want faster and more inconsistant then buy a manual tranny.

Save the money you would spend on a shift light and put it towards a tune. They can make the tranny shift at the optimum time much faster and more accurately than you can manually. Furthermore, unless you have a manual valve body on your A4, which I doubt, you're really hurting the trans by shifting like that. Bottom line: get a tune.

tune...as in "mad Z28" kind of tune? i didnt know that a tune like that can make a trans shift any better... but i guess you learn something new everyday. do any of you guys have a tune? or can tell me whats the best way to go about getting one?
Re: shift light 4 automatic?
Yeah, you can either get an internet type tune from either him or from pcmforless, or you can buy the software and use a laptop to do it yourself. That would be a good investment if you plan on heavy mods in the future since you won't have to have them adjust the tune every time you add a mod like gears or headers. They can adjust everything from your fans to shift points to the rev limiter.
Re: shift light 4 automatic?
Back when I had the stock A4 in my car it would always perform better by sticking it in drive and leaving it there even though I had a TransGo shift kit in it.
The only time you really need a shift lite in an auto car is if you have a manual valve body.
With a 4000 stall and a 6250 rev limit I really NEED a shift lite.

how does the "internet tune" work? is it something that i upload through my OBDII? or what? Sorry if Im sounding like an idiot, i just get very weary when it comes to electronics for a car.
Re: shift light 4 automatic?
Do a search or go to pcmforless.com or madz28.com, those are the two most popular, if not the only two, that can do programs for you. I'm not sure about what software you have to have, but you at least need a laptop and a ALDL cable to connect to your PCM. Go to their sites or call them up and they'll hook you up with everything you need.
