Shift-kits good/bad mod..?

Is a shiftkit a good mod..? I just ordered the transgo but i heard that modding ur car with a shiftkit is pretty dangerous and tricky. Any inputs..? What are the negatives if any.

well, for a quick reply...
it is good for your tranny
it shifts quicker, which means less friction and heat and therefore, much better for your tranny

I don't know if it was related or not but in less than a year after having the shop put in the transgo kit on level 2. My trans blew the servo right out of the side of the tranny . Ruined the housing and made a huge mess of everything under the car.

Re: Shift-kits good/bad mod..?

i got the transgo for the 4L60 (TH700R4). i like it and have no problems with it. love the 1st to second shift, and from then on all shifts are fast and firm.

my suggestion, and i don't know if anyone will agree, but if you do put in a shift kit like a trans go, i suggest you rebuild the tranny with better parts so that it can handle the shift kit. i think this is especially true when a transmission is old. i had a B&M shift kit in before the transgo at 105000 miles, with no rebuild, and my tranny couldn't take and just started leaking oil everywhere.

Bad, it puts a lot of stress on the internals if it has not been rebuilt. It may cause the clutches inside to slip less causing the tranny to last longer in that regard, but the internal pressure will be much higher, and those jarring shifts will cause havoc on the u-joints and rear. Also, it may cause you to need a neck brace. I had done this to my 93, which is not electronically controlled like the 94+, which may have a little to do with it, but trust me, it most likely will be a decision you regret.

Re: Shift-kits good/bad mod..?

I had the Transmission shop throw in a shift kit while they were rebuilding
my tranny for $60.00 to install (AAMCO WANTED $1200.00 TO INSTALL THE SHIFT KIT ONLY ) and I dont regret it one bit! I love the shifting from
1st to 2nd gear i can feel the rear slide. It has no hesitation whatsoever. As soon as it hits that 5500 6k mark it shifts and on to the next gear !

Just be sure you throw on a cooler with it.

The TransGo kit is great, good instructions and video included. It's much better than the cheap kits.

Re: Shift-kits good/bad mod..?

I put a Trans go kit in at 50k and it was great till I lost 2nd gear at 125k.
I beat on it pretty hard though.
Had a local builder beef it up and install a new Trans Go kit and its been perfect for over 20k so far.
Neck snapping second gear scratch is a must have in my opinion.
On street tires it will get sideways, with DRs it just does a nice chirp.

mhm, nice litle mod if you have a fresh tranny, i put one in mine to save it as it was on its way out, bad idea in that case cause it shifted one time.. granted it turned the tires over three times for tha tone shift but it woudlnt shift out of 1st after that and slipped so bad u couldnt give it any gas at all if u wanted to move :-p.. had a good performance rebuild done and now it shifts like a pro
