Ganna attempt to rebiuld an A4 Tranny out of a 3.8, what am I getting into?
The car has been disabled for likely, 5 months now. It is suffering from the imfamouse P1870 Code "Slipping Transmission Component" and grenades on the 1st to 2nd shift. Now the car barely runs (other reasons than the Transmission.) Well we REALLY don't need the car. We have 3 more operatable vehicles but just for the heck of it I decided I'd like to rebiuld the car as a Show Car as it was my first true "Graduation" car... The transmission is going to have to be one of the first things fixxed however. If time and money were of no option, would it be a feasable project for me to take apart and self rebiuld a transmission? Or is there more in-debth (Special Tools, Critical Tourque Settings, ect ect...) that I need to know? If I rebiuld it myself would I be saving any money over a transmission shop? I was also going to of course throw in a shift-kit while I was at it and aswell as a Stall Converter while the tranny was out...
Basically
Option A - Fun Learning Experience, Rebiuld the A4 yourself as the car doesn't have to be on it's wheels anytime soon.
Option B - Walker Transmission will rebiuld it for $1,200 ... Take it to them...
Option C - You already have 3 operatable cars and you're wasting your time on THIS P.O.S ?!

theres no way in hell I would EVER rebuild an automatic electronically controlled tranny without having done it before unless you have a friend who knows his **** and is willing to help

Get it professionaly rebuilt. It's not worth the time and effort you will spend to end up only with a 200 pound paper weight.

I watched some fellow racers swap a manual valve body (new), onto my 700R4 (new), back in 2002. I could not believe the complexity. This was referred to by all as a simple swap, but by the end we had the PA at Norwalk calling out for help from other teams to complete the job and this wasn't a rebuild, it was simply a swap... Basically the valve body reminded me of a very complex version of the childs game wheer you need to navigate a ball bearing through a maze without it falling into a hole.

Heck now that I'm on the subject of transmissions... I drove my mother's Caddillac CTS around and it has an Automatic 5 Speed and that thing feels hella tourqy despite it only has 220 HP... I believe it's because the gearing and the tranny is able to keep the car closer to it's range of power due to it having five gears...
Anyone know any spec's on some A5's I might beable to use?

Eh, when I put a shift kit into my old camaro I had to pull out the valve body and after seeing all the little check ***** and crap in there I decided I will never again do anything to a auto tranny other then fluid change.
