shaft issue?

shaft issue?
Hi all,
For the last couple of days I've been hearing a faint but continuous winding sound while in motion. THe shop guy says that its the shaft. However i'd be taking it back tomorrow in order for him to have a look at the underside of the car. How bad could it be? Is it okay to keep driving and for how long?
