serious problem

My 97 z28 A4 has a problem. The car moves forward in every gear position, including reverse and neutral. It doesn't shift out of first at all, no matter what gear is selected. Say im driving at 20 mph, which is about 2K, and let off the gas, it drops to an idle. Then i give it gas and it revs til about 2K (or whatever RPM according to the speed) and will finally catch. It NEVER shifts out of 1st though. Any ideas?

Your forward clutches are burnt so bad that the inside splined frictions have "welded" themselves to your outside splined steels. This makes the transmission "think" that the forward clutches are applied all the time.

So...is it expensive to fix? And would that cause it to accelerate forward in reverse and neutral?

If it goes forward in reverse just like when in drive Im not so sure on the forward frictions, It would seem that if that was the case when you put the car in reverse rather than going forwad it would be like the brake was on , I am inclined to think there may be a linkage issue here and definatly worth checking first, I would drop the pan and verify that the linkage is ok . I assuming the car does stay still in park . which would elimiante external linkage. I would definatly look into that first.

I would still drop the pan and check the internal linkage in particular the linkage wire/rod I have seen them broken etc, While its true you may find nothing and need a trans anyway. Its worth a quick look for sure.

Your best bet would be to get it rebuilt or buy a built unit.
