Ring and Pinion gear replacement

Is 1600 dollars a normal price for what it costs to get the ring and pinion gears replaced?

Ouch, I wouldn't pay that. The shop I called here in town wanted $300 in labor plus parts.

Ouch- that's pretty steep- even if you replaced all the bearings, pinion, axle, carrier- any other parts replaced? Axles? Carrier? I am sure they nickle and dimed you on the gasket, oil, posi additive, but, sheesh, that is a lot - prolly could have found a salvage yard axle for a couple hundred dollars-
