Question Removing a stripped screw on the differential?

My drivers side axel is bent . And I have another differential laying around so im swapping out the bent axel. But I ran into a problem the bolt that holds the axels in got stripped(this is on the differential i have laying around).

(pic from keliente.com)

this bolt is the one that got stripped..

Any other way that i can remove it to take out the axels? Should i try to drill it out? I dont need anything on that differential except for the left axel.

Apparently my craftsman 8mm was already messed up and i didnt check and thats what stripped the bolt.

what do you mean by striped ? the head is rounded off or the bolt is stripped in the carrier? if the head is rounded off try driving a smaller size socket on, or a 6point of the correct size vs a 12 point, it should unscrew if you break it loose you can take a chisel and hit it at an angle in the correct direction to turn it out good luck

if it is stripped in the carrier may be able to drive the cross pin out with a big hammer and long punch i dont know other than the torch or grinder with a cutting disk

Projectcam94:
Sears sells (or used to) a small set of shorty sockets that are best described as a reverse easy-out. They have cutters inside that can grab what remains of rounded off bolt heads. Other tool vendors may offer these too.
Best of Luck

Thanks NJ-LE but before i put any money down on it i wanted to try everything possible.. And the grinder did the job.. Thanks everyone for the help...

I got my fingers crossed that the bolt on the differential thats on the car wont get rounded.. So im buying a 8mm craftsman socket. Any other recommendations ?

mine just got rounded off too (I think It may have already been rounded by someone else). Mine is still in the car and I need all components. Mine is already rounded to under 5/16. This ruins my night

Tex95z yep i know what your going through.. I got lucky enough that the bolt on the differential thats on the car got loose pretty easy.. I swapped out the axel and it works perfectly now..

You might want to try what NJ-Le said

My set of reverse easy outs where too big so I bought a smaller set from sears for 24.00. Worked like a charm . i went to the local pic and pull and found a pin bolt just sitting on the drivers side floor of a camaro. I got it for free (though it cost 2.00 to get in). all finished with the rear wheel bearings.

Guys just as a point of info. 5/16 inches =.3125'' and 8 milimeters =.314'' are almost exactly the same size. So the next time that you have a 8mm bolt and not the right 8mm tool look to your 5/16'' tools and you don't need to hammer them on unless the bolt is already messed up.
