Rearend Howling

I have a bone stock 99 SS and am getting some noise from the rearend. When you get up around 50-60 mph the rearend starts howling. If you let off the gas it goes away. I know that there is a certain amount of slop in GMs drivelines but is this noise normal? The car has 24k on it and it wasn't abused. It had a synthetic lube package from SLP when delivered and I think the gear oil is synthetic. I was just wondering if the gears in the rear are getting tired or if it's a normal condition. Any help would be great. Thanks

Is it a M6? The pinion could be comming loose, check and see if the pinion seal is leaking.

Re: Rearend Howling

My 01 has a very slight howl at 50-60 mph, you have to listen closely for it, mine isn't leaking at all, and has been babied. Makes me want to throw in some 4.10s ,cause If I'm going to have whining, might as well have some fun with it.

Re: Rearend Howling

My car is an A4. I checked underneath and nothins leaking. There is a little gear oil around the bottom of the diff cover but thats it. I was thinking if it was the gears I would replace them and go a little taller but I don't want to rip into it if the noise is normal.

Re: Rearend Howling

Why would you put taller gears in?
Everybody puts in lower gears for more performance.
Tall gears are 2.73s.
Low gears are 3.73s.
Tall refers to how long it takes to get through a gear.
Taller gears will only make you go slower.

Re: Rearend Howling

I had this same issue with my 2002 SS. It was set up to tight from GM. Were talking no backlash.

They put in new gears and bearings and now I still have a slight whine from 60-65 under throttle.

Re: Rearend Howling

Gears and all that good stuff had to be replaced, still get that howling noise from about 60 mph on light throttle...
