Rear too far back?

I noticed when I put my slicks on they seem to sit really far towards the rear of the car. They aren't centered in the wheel well. I've got about an inch and a half of clearence from the front fender, and about 1/4 inch in the back. I'm afraid that at high speeds as the tire expands it will hit the fender. Also, I'm running a 27 inch ET Street, so I won't be able to run a 28 inch tire with it sitting so far back because it would touch the fender. Is there anything I can do and is this normal for anyone else? I was thinking about adjustable control arms, but I don't know if that will solve my problem. Mods are in sig.

I believe Injuneer had a similar problem and corrected it with adjustable lower control arms. I don't know if moving the rear axle would affect anything else. Fred should jump in later and give you the answer to your problem.

Re: Rear too far back?

My problem was sort of the opposite. With 28.0" slicks the tires grew enough at 125MPH that they hit the leading edge of the wheel opening. I moved the axle assembly back about 1/4" with adjustable LCA's to clear the sheetmetal quarter panels.

With 28" ET Drags, it got worse, and the leading edge of the rear bumper cover had to have about 1.5" cut off of it. After a good dyno pull, the tires had grown enough to hit the sheetmetal that is under the rubber bumper cover, and had already been hammered.

Hard to understand why you have that little clearance in the back, with only a 27" tire. And they will grow if they are not radial tires.

Re: Rear too far back?

One of the techs that I'm friends with also commented that he noticed the rear seemed to be sitting a little far back in the car. So you think with just some adjustable lca's I'll be good? Someone else commented that part of the problem could have been the relocation brackets that sometimes they will cause that problem. I sure hope that new lca's will be all I need...

I was thinking the relocation LCA brackets also. If they are welded on, and were placed too far forward, that would account for the misalignment. If that is the case and you correct it, be mindful of the driveshaft length.
I looked at mine and the wheel seems to be centered. I have the Spohn brackets on my stock rear. Good luck with resolving the problem and keep us posted.
