Inefficient converter or normal power loss?

I recently had my car on the dyno and found that the car was picking up 40 rwhp just by going into lockup. The converter is a 3200 vig. Another thing I can't figure out is why is my car going through the traps at 5900 rpms when, according to online calculators, I should only be seeing 5500 @ 114 mph. I wouldn't think the converter could slip in lockup.
I have 3.73 gears and 26/10.5 et streets.

when racing, your converter wont and cannot lockup. by doing so you'd be losing time and rpm. calculators are hard to believe becuase they don't have all the factors. just like hp calculators from ET's. A car could go 12.3's at 108mph on slicks and it could go 12.8's @108mph and it would tell you that you have 40more hp with slicks. anyway, it probably just missed a variable. i hate calculators. even compression calculators have variables that can trick you a little.

That, and the calculators don't take tc slippage into account.

40hp wouldn't be unusual for an unlocked converter. As was said, with stock programming it won't lockup under wide open throttle in thrid gear (I am not sure abnout 4th). And on a drag strip, you wouldn't want it to.

My converter locks up at the track. It does it on the dyno and when racing. It sounds like it is going into another gear but it's actually the converter locking.

I've debated this with others before who claim it's impossible...til they see it on the dyno. I have a friend with a '94 Z28 also, his too goes into lockup.

In what gear? It "shouldn't" do it in third, which is where you want it when you go through the traps.

Yes, in third.

it should lock when you cruise at any rpm to keep the tranny from overheating, there are wiring tricks to disable it though, locking up is usually a bad thing except for fuel economy

Re: Inefficient converter or normal power loss?

The converter locks like it normally would while cruising but it definitely locks up in 3rd under WOT. No tricks were done to the computer or tranny to make this happen.

Re: Inefficient converter or normal power loss?

Well after looking at the thread relating to lockup converters, I see that converters can be programmed into lockup under WOT in 3rd gear. Now whether this was done to mine I'm not too sure but the thread only confirms what I know is possible.
