Rear End Removal

Are there any step by step tutorials on the web for this? Also, is it possible to do without the car being on a lift? I would like to POR-15 the underside of my car this summer and also the rear axle and figure it would be much easier and I could get better coverage with the rear axle out of the way. I would also be slapping on a rear end girdle while its out. Which also begs the question, what is involved in putting a new rear end cover on and are there any tutorials on that also. Thank you

as far as removing the rear itself...It's just disconnecting anything holding it in.

Disconnect and/or remove:

-TQ Arm
-Driveshatft
-LCA's
-PHB
-Sway Bar connections
-Shox
-Brake HYD lines
-Ebrake connection.
-ABS wheel speed sensors

You may be able to unbolt the brake line connection from the body and then remove the calipers to eliminate braking the HYD system loose.

Are you looking for help for a regular rear end cover install? or a TA girdle install?

TA cover install...Install has it.. I can't link directly to the page.

Lower the e-brake handle, to release the e-brake's grip on the rotor.

Note that the procedure is for the LT1 rear, with a different e-brake setup than the LS1 cars.

We don't know what car you have, since you didn't include a signature.

sorry, it is a LS1. i think i figured it out though.

however, i couldn't figure out how to disengage the parking brake lever. i remember you stick a screwdriver in there but i couldn't remember what you had to push? this is for removing the consol now (sorry, two topics in one thread).

Rear ends

Hey Injuneer!
I was looking on the third-gen site, & someone was asking what the different rear-end widths were for the third gen Camaro, then the fourth gen (he said that the LT1 & the LS1s were different widths from one another, & from the third gen cars)?
Is there a difference between all three of these? Got a URL for the guy to read it? Could you let me know, please!
Thanks! And sorry to 'Jack' your thread, Eagleknight!

If there is a difference between the LS1 and the LT1 4th Gen rear axle assemblies, it is minor. The 3rd Gen rear is somewhere between 3" and 4" narrower than the 4th Gen rear, depending who you believe. Strange shows in their engineering drawings for the bolt-in replacement 12-bolts that the difference is 3".

Here's a post from the "Wheels and Tires" forum by a guy who put a 4th Gen rear in a 3rd Gen. He measured the difference as "about 2" per side", and indicates he heard the LS1 rears were 1/8" shorter per side than the LT1 rears:

All the mounting points are identical. Just the length of the tubes is different.
