Re: rear end rebuild questions.
For an A4 I'd recommend 3.73's. I am at about 1500 rpm around town and 3k on the expressway @ 78-80mph. I have richmonds and have always liked them, they whine a little but I like the sound. Eaton makes a descent posi unit too, I havn't had any personal experience but have heard good things.
Also, If you are going to have the rear apart, you might as well just get the Mega Installation kit. It will have all the parts you need to rebuild your rearend. Once you have installed these parts, the gears and posi it will be good as new...

Re: rear end rebuild questions.
Get the latest issue of High Performance Pontiac magazine. A good article on beefing up the stock 10bolt, with part #'s and prices. Just recognize that there is a limit to what you can do with it. At your current power level, you'll be fine. But if you are thinking about some serious HP upgrades in the future, you might want to think twice before you invest $1,000+ in rebuilding the 10-bolt. With that much money, you're almost 1/2-way to a 12-bolt.

Re: rear end rebuild questions.
1. do i need to drop the rear for this project
no, I've done gear swaps on car and out... easier to do adjustments out of car.
2. how hard is it to drop the rear (never done this before)
not hard, even easier on coil spring cars vs leaf spring. Just be careful where you put stands under the body so you don't damage anything, especially brake lines. use a floor jack to lower... one man job, buddy helps tho... like to tell you to stop lowering when he spots the flex brake line that didn't get unhooked.
