rear end noise
rear end noise
I have a 99 TA. I have noticed that the rear end is making a "woo, woo, woo" type of sound, at any constant speed. What could be the problem? Any suggestion would be helpful.
G,
Could be a couple of things:
1. pinion gears &/or rear bearings/seals; or
2. (and this is a long shot)... did you recently get different rims on the car? Reason I ask is because one time I got new rims on a "tuner" I used to have and they made a constant "whoooo"-loke humming noise, particularly noticeable at speeds 60mph and greater. Does your car make this noise at all speeds? (ie, 20? 30? 40? 50? 60? and more?).
Or, a couple final possibilities that I can think of:
3. axle slippage (are the splines on the axle shot? Do you or the previous owner-if applicaable- spin the tires alot?); and
4. are you sure the noise is from the rear end and not the tranny? could it be flywheel or clutch slippage???
If you're running OEM rear gears that have never been changed, look into changing the rear end lubricant. Does the rear end leak?
Check the tranny fluid. Is it low? Has either the rear end oil or the tranny fluid ever been flushed and changed? How many miles are on your car? Original tranny? or rebuilt? or aftermarket bolt-in?
Could use a bit more info, but I'd start with the fluids first (easiest and cheapest), then progress to having the rear end and tranny checked.

The only other thing I can think of is the tread on the tires. As I mentioned earlier, when I had the "tuner" car and got new rims, I also got Nitto 555 Extreme 17's put on. The tire dealer said they might be contributing to the road noise (a low drone kind of sound).
