Rear end gears?

I have the chance at buying a good rear end from a 1997 camaro z28 since my camaro has the 2.73. I wanted to know what gears were 1997 camaro z28s coming out of the factory with so I could upgrade from my 273s? Its an automatic car if that helps

Re: Rear end gears?

I believe 3:73 was the stock gear in your '97.

Re: Rear end gears?

3.23 for automatics, 3.42 for manuals
Some a4's might have 2.73's
None came stock with 3.73

Re: Rear end gears?

The Z28 with an A4 trans could have either 2.73 (base model) or 3.23 (performance rear axle option) gears. M6 had the 3.42's, as mentioned above. And as Bruce pointed out, there was no 4th Gen that left the factory with a 3.73 rear axle.

Assuming from your screen name (elis94camaro) that you have a 94, you have a rear axle assembly with a single sensor for 3-channel ABS. The 95-97 cars have either the single sensor 3-channel ABS setup, or a two sensor 4-channel ABS + ASR (aka TCS - traction control). You have to be sure the wheel sensor system in the 97 rear axle assembly matches your 94.

If you don't have a 94 (or even if you do), add a "Signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, trans and any major mods. That makes it easier for people to help you.

That's pretty easy. The 3 channel systems havea sensor on the center section of teh rear. It's on top and is just a wire going to a sensor. The 4 channel systems have a sensor at each wheel and none on the center section. The wheel sensors will be behind the rear brakes....

Does your car have traction control?

Re: Rear end gears?

A stock 3.23 ratio would have a 3 series carrier.

Re: Rear end gears?

Some V6 A4 cars came with 3.42s, if you can believe that.

Re: Rear end gears?

My dad's V6 A5 Explorer has factory 3.73 gears. My mom's V8 A4 Crown Vic has factory 3.55 gears. Both have Trac-lock. I have the 3.42's with Posi-trac. Seriously, I love these set ups. Can't imagine what 2.73's with an open differential with be like.
