It sounds like you have a bearing going out (probably pinion bearing). When you do your rebuild, just buy an install kit. A good one should include carrier bearings, pinion bearings and seal, shims, races, and crush sleeve. Depending on the miles, you might want to go ahead and replace the axle bearings and seals, since you will have it apart.

As for the gearing, i believe Motive might make a 3.42 for 2 series carrier or you can try Strange or Precision Gear. Why not just go with 3.73? I went from 2.73 to 3.73 and loved the difference it made. And i drive about 80 miles a day.

Yes your car has a posi. Since you do highway driving, i would recommend staying away from Richmond Gears. You will hate them.
I would recommend Precision or the Motive Gears. I'm not sure Precision makes a 3.42 gear set for a 2 series carrier, but i would check. I do believe Motive makes a gear set for the 2 series. Either one of these i would think you would be happy with.
All of this is given with the assumption the gears are set-up properly. Otherwise, anything you choose could potentially make some noise.

Strange makes 3 series gears for a 2 series carrier. Check out thunderracing.com.
