Question Question about my 6-speed

I recently purchased a '93 Z28 with about 125k miles on it. The shifter feels very sloppy when I go through the gears. It has an aftermarket Hurst shifter, and I've compared it with the stock shifter (which the previous owner gave me) and the stock one is definitely worse. So, I know the shifter isn't the problem. Anyways, basically I can upshift through all the gears pretty easily, but when I try to downshift or put it in Neutral, it just feels very vague and not "crisp" at all. It's very hard to tell which gear I'm downshifting into, because the shifter does not naturally move into position. I have to be very contientious about what gear I'm going into, or I'll end up in the wrong gear. It basically feels like the shifter just binds alot, and I have to really pay attention to what I'm doing when I'm downshifting. Could this be an internal tranny problem??? By the way, I don't experience any grinding or weird noises, and I can up-shift through gears pretty quickly when I'm driving hard, but the shifter just feels like it's set in a bowl of mashed potatoes!!!. I also just had the fluid changed and it was VERY dirty, and a little metallic-looking....also, if the tranny is in neutral and I pull the shifter all the way to the left or to the right, it just sticks in place, it doesn't return to the middle position....Any info would be greatly appreciated

Could be the detent assembly needing replacement inside the transmission. Is it more so left and right or up and down?

It's mainly left and right. I can pull the shifter all the way to the left or to the right and it won't return to the middle, it will stay where I put it. Shifting into gears isn't a problem, but when I shift out of gear, it doesn't go into neutral properly. I always have to wiggle the shifter back and forth to make sure it's actually out of gear. Since the shifter won't center itself when it's out of gear, when I try to downshift from like 6th to 4th or 3rd for example, it's almost impossible to go directly into the gear I'm looking for. It usually takes a couple of seconds to make sure it's in the right gear. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!

I don't think that the shifter's the problem, because I installed the stock shifter and it felt even sloppier. The problem seems to be something with the tranny itself
