Question about 4L60e accumulator
Question about 4L60e accumulator
I went to change the accumulator spring today, while a buddy was finishing up a 700r rebuild. Should the accumulator in mine be set up exactly the same as the 700r ? Mine had the big spring inside first, then the cup part with the pin in the middle, then a smaller spring on the outside of that that goes up against the bottom of the trans. The 700r had the cup part with the pin in it, then just the big spring in it. The cup shaped part was also facing the opposite direction. Mine's been like this for a while and seems to work like that. The trans shop just rebuilt it a few weeks ago and it was like that when they were done. Also, even after I changed the spring to a firmer one (to the brown one, from the yellow one) I didn't notice a bit of difference in performance.
Re: Question about 4L60e accumulator
I know there are a few differences in the accumulators between the 700 and the 60e, but for the life of me I can't picture it in my head right now. But if I remeber correctly you can setup the 60e just like the 700 for firmer shifts... Let me get back to you on that one, when I know for sure...
Re: Question about 4L60e accumulator
they shift alot better with the piston installed first and then the spring.the other way the only accumulation is essentially via the servo springs.if you study the circuitry this will imediately become apparent.
Re: Question about 4L60e accumulator
Is it supposed to be like that from the factory ? Any downfalls to setting it up like the 700r4 ? Of course I'd have to get rid of the small spring on top of the piston.

How you want to set it up is up to you. Here is a tip though, think of it this way, the accumulator if there to slow the apply, it has to fill that space then push fluid to apply. Hense the name accumulator, it accumulates the fluid before it allows it to apply the gear change...
Knowing that, maybe it might help you figure out the best way to set it up for yor car.. For example, hard fast shifts are done with less fluid accumulation, ie the fliud gets through to apply faster...
Re: Question about 4L60e accumulator
K. I think I'm going to switch it around this weekend. I just received the correct boost valve today. (they sent me one for a 700r). I have a .490 to put in. And I have the brown accumulator spring.
Next problem is, it shifts way harder at light to part throttle than it does at full throttle. What causes that?

As far as feeling harder at part throttle is concerned, mine felt similar until I realized it was actually spinning the tires on the shift and that is why it felt that way. My car runs with the cutout open at all times so I couldn't hear the tires spinning. I put the drag radials on it at the track and then felt the difference at higher throttle input. Then I took it to the dyno and being srapped down it was highly obvious then as well that the tires were slipping on the shift, that made it feel softer at full throttle, but really it wasn't.
Just check if this might be your problem...
