Q about checking trans fluid

As long as I've had my car, I've always had my trans serviced by a local shop and because its always been fine- untill now, I, myself have never checked it.
And now for my stupid Q!
The trans was totally rebuild last spring and the other week I discovered a puddle of trans fluid under the car. As it turned out, one of the lines that runs from the radiator to the trans was rubbing against the sway bar and a pinhole got worn through it! Im assuming I lost ALOT if not most of the ATF.
Im having a difficult time getting a good reading on its dipstick tube, even after adding a few Qts- nothing changes. Im checking it at idle & warm motor. Does trans fluid show up easily/visibly like oil does on its dipstick? Im asking because its seems very hard to read- next to no fluid on dipstick. Since I dont know how healthy the trans really is, im not driving it- as the clutchpacks are slipping pretty good (prob because of very low fluid) & Im not quite able to have it flatbedded to the shop yet. The shop used synthetic Mobil 1 ATF.

thanks!
