PROS and MODS Answer this T-56 Question....
Hey guys, I live in Boston, MA and I am currently in the market for a t-56 to convert my lt1 into a beast. I plan on using an Lt4 engine and I have been looking for the viper t-56 conversion for my car. I have run into some problems along the line and here they are...
I have found a bunch of places that sell t-56's and I am not impressed by any of them. I have tried contacting at least 5 people and no one was able to give me a straight answer.
THIS IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR:
A Viper t-56 kit that will bolt to an LT1 with little or no mods.
Here are the places that were readily available (wish there were more)
D&D Performance
http://www.ddperformance.com/t56__6_...nsmissions.htm
I called and they guy on the phone seemed confused by me telling him that I wanted to install a viper t-56 with the 30 spline shaft in my camaro. He told me he wasn't sure where the shifter would end up because it is 6 inches off from the normal t-56 and thiS WAS A SURPRISE BECAUSE THESE GUYS ARE SUPPOSED TO SPECIALIZE IN THIS!!!
article here: http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te.../148_0305_t56/
THIS ARTICLE IS ALL ABOUT converting this viper t-56 to fit in a camaro yet when I called the guy at D&D he said he had no idea how it would work?????
FORTE's PARTS CONNECTION
Mike told me that he had new regular 27 spline t-56 transmissions in stock for $2000.00 that were just new stock units and didn't even talk about a kit to convert a viper t-56 to fit into our cars.
After hearing this from this place I was even MORE CONFUSED BECAUSE I FOUND THIS SITE:
http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/v...onversion.html
This whole site has forte's name on it but it talks all about this viper conversion.
NOw this guyis supposed to have invented an apter plate or somthing that fits this transmission to this engine and he diddn't mention a word about it. INstead tried selling a normal t-56 to me.
NO ONE HAS GIVEN ME THE STRAIGHT ANSWER I AM LOOKING FOR>
I want to find a place that tells me Yes We have that transmission and we have the kit to bolt it into your 1995 camaro z-28 and have it working immediatly.
My understanding after looking at some of the sites is this:
-It looks like the "adapter plate" is somthing that will alow a bellhousing for an LT1/t-56 to be bolted to it because the normal viper transmission will not accept any bellhousing that would fit the 5.7 liter 350block.
-NO PLACE SELLS THE BELLHOUSING.
- No one mentions any hydraulics for the transmission and one place offers a custom throwout bearing....
- THE DRIVESHAFT HAS TO BE CUSTOM NO MATTER WHAT WHEN CONVERTING TO A VIPER T-56??????
After looking around I see that a regular t-56 that is new is $2000 and a Viper t-56 is $2500. I WOULD DEFINATELY GET THE VIPER TRANSMISSION FOR $500.00 more! WHO WOULDN"T! Now forte is suposed to have this transmission but instead tried selling me a regular t-56 instead. I dont understand that...
I dont want to know about other crap I want ot know how a vip[er transmission is going to fit and what parts are needed exactly on a LIST and also The price! TOTALLED! Not a piece of the price or Pieces missing fm the kit or NO instructions on the whole deal...
I thought there were kits to bolt this transmission right into our cars but after calling 5 places and researching it looks like no one who sells these can give me a straight forward answer to this modification.
I found a place that sent me a quote some time ago and wish I still had the contact information because they offered an adapter plate, hydraulics, shifter, billet shift ****, cluth bellhousing etc etc. btu my harddrive crashed and that was that.
I already have a new mcleod dual friction street clutch.
There are also jerks on ebay that modify regular t-56 transmissions and say that they are the viper versions and after contacting them they tell me that they just say that to sound better....
THAT'S PROFESSIONAL......
I NEED A REAL PROFESSIONAL THAT HAS THESE TRANSMISSIONS AND CAN GIVE ME A REAL ANSWER>
IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME A REAL ANSWER ON THIS IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
Hope someone has some insight. I know I left things out but I will be checking back a lot on this thread! I NEED A TRANS!

Re: PROS and MODS Answer this T-56 Question....
Umm, there is no "Viper tranny" kit that would allow mating a Viper tranny to an LT1 as far as I know. The "Viper T56 upgrade" reffers to upgrading the input shaft to the stronger Viper unit (with some modifications) not the entire thing.

Re: PROS and MODS Answer this T-56 Question....
On the contrary, They do offer a conversion kit with bellhousing and adapter plate to mate the viper transmission to the lt1 and if you look at some of the websites I posted you would see that chevy high performance magazine had a special on it where they purchase dthe D&D Viper into Camaro transmission kit.
ONly thing is they talk about having a custom driveshaft made because the length is different after putting in the viper trans.
ALso, a new 30 spline slip yoke is used rather then the weaker 27 spline.
ANyone who knows
THE REAL DEAL.
STILL WAITING FOR YOU TO REPLY....
Any Vendors selling this kit can send a quote to djk19@rcn.com

Re: PROS and MODS Answer this T-56 Question....
Why do you think you need to upgrade the T56? I ran one with >700rwhp including a fair number of runs on a prepped track with slicks and had no problems. In fact, even though I am making more hp now I am ditching the TH400 and reinstalling a stock T56. SInce I have retired the Camaro from drag racings and will be running just on the street I fully anticipate that there will be no problems.

Re: PROS and MODS Answer this T-56 Question....
I like to go slightly overkill with things that matter to make sure that absolutely no problems happen at all. I also hate transmission problems and I wanted to just cut that whole part of worry out.
I am thinking of just getting a normal t-56 because of the hassle with making parts fit.
I had found a place that did sell a complete swap in t-56 conversion for 3 grand and I can't find them now. they even offered the billet mcleod master at a discounted price!
WHERE ARE YOUUUU!!!!!!
haha I am serious.. Someone must know of this place. They used blue on their page and when I requested a quote they sent me a formal quote in .psd format with everyhitng about the full install of the viper trans into the f bod etc.
I gotta find this place.
I figured there would be more like it but after my hard drive crashed I looked for it. I can't find it and Nobody else makes it as simple as they did. To everyone else it is a big deal. Whats goin on here*

Here's the deal
D&D (for sure) can convert a standard GM LT1 style T56 over to take a larger Viper output shaft. There webside even advertises the parts for the DIY'er. Whoever you were talking to at D&D is a moron and needs more training. This conversion involves disassembly of your T56 and installing a modified (shortened by about .62") Viper shaft with the larger splines. They will remachine your tailhousing for a larger yoke bushing and seal. While your at this change, you should get the aluminum shift forks changed out for steel ones. You may opt for a better syncro package also (your choice). You will need to purchase a Chrysler slip yoke to match up with the spline count and your Driveshaft U joint (probably a 1350 spicer). If you get the same moron on the phone again, ask to talk to Don Walsh - He's one of the D's in D&D and is a great guy. He actually got my Viper parts for me so that I could do my own before this mod became proven by D&D as well as others. This modified T56 will bolt up to your stock LT1 T56 bell housing , It will work great with a Street Twin clutch and life will be good. If you fail totally at getting ahold of anyone worth while at D&D, Try John Donato. Do a search on this forum to get his contact info. John does this conversion also and seems to have a good reputation.
Secondly, It is very difficult to put a true Chrysler Viper transmission into an F body. The shifter is absolutely in the wrong position and it won't mount up to your bell housing very well. This option is to be avoided.
Third, If your looking for all out drag race setup that is fully SFI certified and uses a completly different clutch arrangement, then hang on to your wallet. I did this one 1 year after I converted my LT1 T56 over to a Viper mainshaft.
The all out system uses a standard smallblock SFI Mcleod bellhousing, a 10.5" log style 3 finger PP, an internal hydraulic TOB, and A T56 that is called the GM aftermarket T56. This trans has the larger out put shaft but the shifter is relocated to work perfectly with the longer Mcleod bellhousing. This arrangement has a lot of issues to overcome - header clearance, starter clearance, and rear trans mount. But once it's done, it works awsome. I did it for the safety of the bell housing. My tootsies were worth the $3800 or so that this cost me.
I hope I've helped clear this up a little bit. This is not heresay- I actually did this myself in my garage - honest-injun
Phew
Done rambling

Re: PROS and MODS Answer this T-56 Question....
HEy man, you rock. Thanks for the input and about the input/output shafts
That clears everything up and I have found a place that sells upgraded t-56's shipped for $2000 from a custom shop. The guy messes with the syncros keys and make sthe billet instead of stamped and he also doe s a few other things. I am going to go with a bolt in regular trans. WIth my mcleod dual clutch it is going to br strong as SHiznit anyway.
Hopefully!
