problem with drivers side rear axel on the 95 z28

today i was changing the brakes on my 95 z28 a4 when i noticed that the drivers side rear axel had some play in it. with the rotor removed i can hold the axel by the studs and it will move in and out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. the passenger side doesnt do this. I know this is not good. i know its not suspose to do this. I am a ase certified mechanic but drive train isnt my strongest point. Im thinking that maby its bad berrings or maby the retaining clip is not in correctaly. But if it is the retaining clip then wouldnt i be able to pull the whole axel out? like i said drive train isnt my strongest point by a long shot and this is the first time i have ever seen this type of problem.

You might have an excessively worn c-clip or side gear. Bearing or axle wear would allow you to move the axle radially, not in/out.
