problem with 6-speed???

I have an M6 '93 Z28 (125k miles)and I've got an issue with my tranny. I just bought the car used a couple of months ago off of Ebay for really cheap because it needed a motor, so I never got to drive it until a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Basically, the shifter just feels incredibly sloppy--for example, if I pull the shifter all the way to the left or to the right while it's in neutral, it just sticks in place. This becomes a big problem when I am trying to downshift, because it's basically impossible to find the right gear quickly. It also feels like it binds when I pull the shifter out of any gear (I always have to wiggle the shifter back and forth to make sure it actually IS out of gear). When I upshift through the gears, it feels sloppy, but I can still manage to upshift pretty quickly (it's mainly trying to downshift quickly that's the problem). A few important things too-- #1 it had an aftermarket Hurst shifter when I bought it and I've tried the stock shifter too and they both exhibit the same symptoms, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the shifters. #2 I changed the tranny fluid and it was VERY dirty and looked somewhat metallic. #3 I haven't noticed any grinding or strange noises coming from my tranny, it seems to be pretty solid---it's just the shifting action that really sucks!! Any info. would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!

I'm not so sure that the shifter's the problem though, because both the Hurst shifter that the previous owner put on the car and the stock shifter do the same thing. I've installed both shifters and they have the same problem; the Hurst just has shorter throws
