Post your A4 to M6 conversion experience

Hey guys,

Looking to convert over from an auto to 6-speed in my '97 camaro LT1. I already found the kit I am buying from someone on this board.

Just wondering if some people would share their experiences with the install. Such as: how long did it take to do everything?, what is the most difficult part?, or any other hints or insights you wanna give....
thanx a lot in advance....

Read my comments in this thread (I'm not typing all that again!! )

Also, try searching this forum for keywords "swap" and/or "conversion" ... you should find lots of info . General concensus is A4 --> M6 = good .

Will I need a new driveshaft due to the 6-speed tranny being longer?

OK cool thanx a lot!! I am going to pick up everything soon & will let you know so we can make sure I have everything.

I was gonna take it to a shop and have them do it. But after searching I see that it shouldn't be too much of a pain to do myself.

Pedals are probably the worst part. Other than that, getting all the right parts is most of the battle, just do a lot of research and you'll be fine.

Everybody complains about the pedals!! I actually found that one of the "easier" parts? Getting the master cylinder in was harder!

It's not as bad as you think really. I swapped mine in, in about 3 days taking my time. I had got EVERYTHING needed to swap over. The guy I purchased the parts from was kind enough to label every nut and bolt when he was disassembling his car. Here's a good site to check out for the swap. This is the write-up I followed: http://www.afrashteh.com/tranny_pics/T56.htm

I've been wanting to do this for years, but the task just seems daunting. Does anyone have a complete list with actual GM part numbers? Did most of you get used T56 trannies or go for a new one?

^^^ It's really not as bad as you think. Just take your time. I purchased my parts used. (Previous owner was going T400) Got everything I needed w/ a Spec Stage 2 for 1200.

I did this about a year and a half ago. It took me and my friend a day to do. There wasn't anything extremely challenging with the swap. The only thing that was difficult was making sure the hole I had to cut in the firewall was in the correct spot for the Clutch master cylinder.

Once i got all the part it didnt it took about two days working on and off on it. Like the others said, doing the pedals was the worst part. as far the were to drill the hold for the m/c If you flip the rug expsoing the rubber mat underneth, there is a template for you to drill through. Some people removed there steering wheel for more room and some dont. I did and it made putting the pedals in that much easier. I aslo removed my drivers seat and found at least five dollors in change from over the years. Good luck!

The swap isn't bad at all. I did it myself in two days working off and on at it. I pulled the steering column which made the pedals easy. For me mounting the McLeod M/C was the hardest part, two sets of hands would have made it much easier. I used the same guide as posted above and has all the part numbers for the wiring components you need for the swap. I found a used tranny and all the parts for a good price. I did find that I was missing the inspection cover and GM no longer has that part available so I made one from 1/8 thick aluminum.
