Post about clutches

I posted this in the drivetrain forum and nobody replied, does anyone know the answer?

I found Clutch kits at O'reilys, Adavanced auto parts, and AutoZone.

Do all these carry the Lt4 PP in their clutch packages? I know the Autozone PP is an lt4, but what about O'reilys and Adavanced? I'm asking b/c the Autozone clutch kit is about $279 whereas the other to stores have it for around $195. -Thanks- Brad

A cheap clutch is not the way to go. Spend the extra $$ and get a nice Spec or a Centerforce or a Ram clutch. You'll be alot happier.

They all have the same Pressure Plate though. Valeo has a patent on them. SLP is the Valeo with holes in it. One of the other aftermarket clutches is the Valeo with weights on it. I just want the Lt4 pressure plate, throwout bearing and alignment tool. Them I'm going to use a McCloud 7500 rpm performance disc. -Brad

Spend the extra money and get a CenterForce. I had problems with clutches and tried some of the cheapos! After my 2nd replacement clutch I decided to buy a good one. Never had to worry about that again. The CenterForce grabs like no other also! I bought the CenterForce Dual Friction for around $520? from Summit. I just yanked the motor out and checked on the clutch...not even worn out! By far the best clutch I've ever seen!

Re: Post about clutches

Do NOT go with a SPEC clutch. I have the stage 3 and geez that thing sucks sooo bad. I am going to agree and say dont go cheap on this one, you may regret it. If you can, go with a Mccleod. Thats all i hear everyone recommending. Never heard anyone talk bad about them, which doesnt happen to often. Lets see if someone chimes in disagrees, and says there ****.

Ummm, what's your basis for saying that SPEC sucks..maybe you just can't drive? I have a SPEC stage 3, and it works great..grabs better than the old centerforce Dual Friction I had. McCleod Street twins is what everybody talks about not the single disc ones. I also wouldn't cheap out on a clutch...its too much work to do it again...just do it right the first time. If I had more money, i would have went ahead and got the McCleod street twin. But I am very happy with my SPEC and I know plenty of others that love em. I don't think there is any problem doing what he wants to do....I bet it would be a very good clutch, and certainly not cheap.

Austin - based on the mods in your sig I don't think you'll see any gains or benefit from an aftermarket set up. I researched this a few years ago and ended up going with an OEM set up from SLP & gmpartsdirect. Unless you're approaching 350-400 I think a street twin, SPEC 3, or the like is overkill. I definitely woul dnot do anything less than OEM though. As someone stated, it's too much work to do it twice.

Again, that's just what I picked up from a few searches on here.

Re: Post about clutches

There's nothing wrong with the Spec 3 clutch. Mine held up to well over 400 rwhp on a daily basis for over 40k miles, and it's still going strong on the same (detuned) motor. You wouldn't know it wasn't stock unless I told you. There's also nothing wrong with the street twin either, but if you don't need a clutch to handle 1200 hp, why spend twice the money?
