Possible Street Twin Problem Please Help

Unhappy Possible Street Twin Problem Please Help

I’ve had a McLeod Street Twin in my car for a couple of years. It has less than 5k miles on it and I’ve had no problems, until: The other day, I was playing a joke on my son by dumping the clutch at low speed (< 5mph) while he was drinking some water. To make a long story short, it was a huge mistake. It sounded like I had shattered my transmission! I took my car to a friend’s shop and found that the teeth on the McLeod hubs were gone and the input shaft spline teeth were bent! You could literally spin the disks on the input shaft. We called McLeod and they had us ship the unit back and replaced both hubs. Meanwhile I had the transmission rebuilt. The transmission shop had never quite seen anything like this and could not tell me what the cause was. Now my buddy is thinking that the entire cause of this is the Street Twin and is recommending that I go back to a stock clutch. His reasoning is that he feels that the smaller thickness of the McLeod hub teeth vs. the stock one caused the damage. With the transmission on the ground he showed me how much to and fro play the McLeod has vs. the stock clutch…and I have to agree that the stock clutch “seems” to have less play, but once it is installed, does it really matter? I have a hard time believing the solution is a stock clutch, but something caused this damage and we do not know what. Sorry for my ignorance…any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mine happened with about 20-25000 kms and since i got it fixed it has lasted about another 10-15000 kms so far. Mcloed told me it was driving style when i called them but didn't really see how that applied. I've heard of it happening a few times but with the amount of people running it, i think it is just a fluke thing. Other than that i have no complaints about the Mcleod and i have been running it for about 30-40000 kms as a daily driver, and in quite a bit of traffic.
Anyways good luck and i wouldnt go back to the stocker.

thats weird , i have done a few 5000 rpm dumps on et slicks . bent the strange st axles but the street twin has never had a issue. i would keep using it but thats just me.

How does somebody come with up with the reasoning that a tapered solid hub with a
1-1/8 x 26 spline is going to break your shaft and a sprung hub 1-1/8 x 26 is going to cure your problem? I assure you that there are cars running the streets of America with 10x more motor using the same hub and beating the living snot out of thier cars with no problems. You made the right choice when you invested into a street twin.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll stick with the McLeod and assume it was a fluke. I know it certainly is not my tremendous hp/tq
